WEINHARD BREWHOUSE

Block 2 of Brewery Blocks Project
NW 12th between W Burnside & Couch

Two industrial red brick buildings, completed in 1908 and appearing as a single structure, form the oldest remaining parts of the Blitz-Weinhard complex in continuous operation between 1865 and August 1999. They are the Brewhouse and the malt and hop building, designed by Whidden and Lewis, architectural pioneers responsible for Portland City Hall (1895), Multnomah County Courthouse (1915) and many other downtown structures.

The Brewhouse (12th and Burnside) is five stories and the malt and hop building (12th and Couch) is six stories. The English-Italian Romanesque style buildings feature huge brewing vats, arched windows and doorways and the Hospitality Room.

The Brewhouse is considered one of the most significant historic buildings in the state because of its link to Henry Weinhard and as an example of turn-of- the-century industrial architecture, says Chet Orloff of the Oregon Historical Society
