AUTOMOTIVE DEALERSHIP
Block 1 of Brewery Blocks Project
NW 12th & W Burnside
Many new buildings in the 1920s and 1930s were designed to respond to the emergence of the automobile in Portland. In 1929, architect Charles Ertz designed an automobile garage between 12th and 13th on West Burnside for the Henry Weinhard Company. This example of Zigzag Moderne style features cast stone shields and flutter pillars.
The garage later was used as a Chevrolet auto dealership. Most recently the building was in use as part of the brewery and as warehouse space. Space for the building was created when a nine-story brick Brewhouse was demolished.
The three historic buildings are located on an original land claim owned by John Couch, a Boston sea captain whose maritime ventures helped establish Portland as an important sea port. Applications are pending for national and state landmark status for the Brewhouse and armory buildings.
